Silence

I turned my Xserve RAID off while I was away. I am reluctant to turn it back on becasue my apartment is so nice and quiet with it off. I look forward to the day when I can store my data remotely. My parents don't know it yet but one day I'm going to turn a closet in their house into my backup data center. More recently I've been told about cool companies like the digital railroad but I am not quite ready for that commitment. Soon though, soon. I need to get my images into a more usable archive. Don't we all?

Take pictures and store them wisely.

Speaking of backup data... I recently got my hands on Aperture (Apple's shiny new photo software), and it's got some robust backup/archiving features. Well, at least, I think it does, but I'm kind of a novice.

You're right about the 1.0 syndrome of aperture. Great tool for editing shoots. Limited use for editing images or archiving.

I just ordered a ReadyNAS - similar to your XRAID solution. I use iView Media Pro for the mananagement part.

Be careful of using your parents closet for a data server if they are utilizing a wireless network.

I don't think you want people having free access to your older work. Make sure that it is sufficiently protected from the outside.
