This and That

2006 seems to have inspired lots of feedback from folks who come to this blog and my site. Thank you to all who share your thoughts and apologies if I can't respond to everyone. I'll do my best, just no promises.

I spent the night on an airplane returning to windy, wet New York. I leave for Texas this evening so most of my day will be spent doing laundry and packing gear. Glamourous eh?! In the meantime, I am inspired to shoot more RAW (thanks to a heathy nudge from a guy in Chicago) and excited to hit the ground running now that the past month's vacation travel is over.

It looks like I am going to go to New Orleans with my Streetstudio in early February. That poor place. I am intrigued to see the faces of those still there and those who have come to assist. That trip will actually start in Kansas City and include a little road trip.

Oh, and it looks like Adobe felt the heat from Apple's Aperture and released a beta version of something it calls Lightroom. From first glace, it looks pretty darn cool. The fact that it's a free download is also a treat. Should my laptop (which is suffering major malfunctions) not crap out on me on the flight to texas, I'll play with it. Everyone should, it's free!

Take pictures.

Shoot more RAW? What was the nudge that made you decide that?

I usually shoot JPEGs for a number of reasons not the least of which is speed and size but something he said, which I'm not going to share, gave me pause. I'm not trying to be cryptic. It's just that it came in an email so I can ssume it wasn't meant for everyone.

First awesome photos of the last couple of days! Nice work!

Second, on RAW, I started shooting JPG this year because it seems like a lot of pro photographs (such as yourself) didn't waste their time with RAW so I thought I was being too much of gear head shooting RAW. (It definitely is a slower to process, although LightRoom could change that).

So if you do decide to stick with RAW please share that you have made the change - even if you don't share the details.

I will only be shooting RAW for the Streetstudio stuff. Night will most certainly stay as JPEG work. Thanks for the kind words.

I made the change a couple of years ago when I started producing prints for clients. Two things make the difference for me.

1) benefits of fine tuning color balance and tonal range with RAW data before B&W conversion

2) Tweaks available in RAW converter for noise and scaling.

Without going into gearhead mode, which is the death of creativity. (see my blog for rants) I just get better detail and control over tone with less artifacts with a RAW workflow.

I did a bunch of work both ways over the course of three years and simply got better results with RAW.

Last point, I shoot portraits in natural light with lots of variables and not always a lot of control. The flexibility of RAW allows me to work a little looser and fix minor issues with exposure and color balance in production.

No worries Clay, I get what you are saying. Assuming James was the one who sent the mail in the first place, then "Thanks James".

Oddly enough, I used to shoot all my stuff in RAW, but now only the colour; having moved up from the Eos 10D to a 20D, I find I like my black & white via the presets, rather than converting post RAW. It just helps me "see" black & white, while actually shooting.

Loving the street studio stuff as always Clay. Would love to see more of your work along the lines of the VII seminar trip though... I loved those shots of children at play.
