Motivate Me I'm Irish

It took a whole lot of motivation on my part to head out last night. I had never shot St. Patrick's day stuff but for whatever reason my head wasn't in it. I had spent a few hours earlier in the evening making little iPhoto books of my night and travel stuff which was good fun but sapped my energy for making new pictures. I cleaned my living room/office and showered to delay things just a little longer but soon enough the choice was to either go to bed or shoot. I opted to shoot.

I'm sure we all get in funks when it comes to shooting. I find that I just have to push on through. I tell myself that there is no other choice. I am a photographer. Nothing else will do. If I don't shoot, I am nothing. It's like those times when you just don't want to go to a party but when you do, you have a great time. That happens enough to me that I've learned. Go, do it, it'll be worth it.

Take pictures.

on the other hand, I did the alternate, where you don't go out, though you KNOW it's going to be a good time. Went to bed early, all that kind of stuff. Do i regret not going out? sure. But the glory of new york is, with or without st. patty's, every night is a party, and when you get right down to it, you can have a great time every single day of the year in this town. That's how i justified staying cozy at home, but now maybe that makes me "not a photographer" which i will have to come to terms with...

Clay, definitely can relate to the funk comment but you nailed it on that you just have to force yourself to do the opposite of what your funk is telling you to do. Glad to hear that you made it out and took some shots. I hope that when you got back you moved through the haze!

I have to ask - do you get drunk when you go out to these places where you do your night stuff? Because I do, and what ends up happening to me is that I either get too drunk to remember to shoot any pictures at all, or I wake up with a memory card full of pictures I don't remember taking.

lol. that's funny. i drink but rarely, if ever, get drunk. i appreciate the question as it's very valid. having a drink in my hand and doing a tequilla shot with folks once in while is part of the process and helps me blend in. if i was just a guy lurking around with my big 'ol camera and flash it'd be a bit creepy to all but the most inebriated folks.

take pictures, drink responsibly.
