Maria in My New Light

As promised, I made some shots using my new light without me as a model. As fortune would have it, my Coyote Ugly friend Maria needed some shots so she became my guinea pig (even though she was really after more ring light shots).

This image is pretty much just the way the camera recorded it. I ran it through my "special sauce" but did little to no burning or dodging. I love the way the light falls of so quickly and she seems to pop off the background. I am curious to bring it into some different locations including ones with more depth. My apartment has its limitations after all.

Make pictures.

Great to see an example, I was so curious what kinds of pictures this lighting would produce. Is the fall off due to a grid or is that just how kino lights behave? I was going to drop some money on some strobes finally to fart around with, but I like DIY and might save the beans to give this stuff a whirl, I also gotta get some backgrounds, the one in this image is awesome, matches the mood perfectly. I just realized that the grid question might be like asking the magician how its done. I have many such questions, a ton from the night life series too :) I cannot seem to view those night life shots enough they were very inspirational for a wedding reception I shot...

it does, in fact, work. it better, i just bought/ made the darn thing ;-)

shane, it'll probably pop into my shots from time to time. there isn't much to see. it's a home depot light on a stand. in this shot i think i had some black tinfoil on either side of it to give a little more fall-off but that's not a requirement. there is no grid. as a home-made jobbie, a grid isn't an option. it's definitely not magic. it's more like science. less trickery, more experimentation.

that background is a bunch of metal that i salvaged over the years. i don't recommend it as it's a bit of a hazard. (ask Peter at Digital Labrador. he probably has a scar from one run-in with my wall).

so glad you like the night stuff. i'll try to do more of that soon. either that or keep picking from the archives.

Ha ha i was at Cielo (sp?) in june was hoping to see you there at the club taking pics....though after being there while the music was good I don't think there was much tom foolery going on by the guests...might not of produced the best pics. And experimentation, I like that (heck its why I got a holga too). Scars be damned, that still makes for a really cool urban metal background.

Dude, I rarely comment on your blog but I recognized the background and had a bad flashback. I showed Christy so she could see the apparatus that nearly cut my toe off. How funny that you mentioned me here. Yes I do have a scar to prove it. Hope you are well. Wish you were going to Bhutan with us. Cheers.
