Row 28 Study aka Snaps on a Plane
Here are some from the archives that are apropos in that I am "jonesing" to get on an airplane. I haven't been home this long in months. Thankfully, I'm off to LA on Thursday for an indeterminate amount of time.
The story behind these images is typical me. I was in the plane with three seats to myself when I decided to see if I could make some cool shots without leaving my row. I'm a geek and I'm okay with it.
Upon initial review and editing, I ended up making this composite and hadn't really looked back. This morning, the window shot caught my eye in a random sweep of the folder.
For those of you who fly a lot, it's American Airlines (the ice should be the giveaway).
It's a little study in selective focus using my 50mm ƒ1.4 to it's fullest. I love that lens. I don't know if I've shared the composite before. Apologies if it's a repeat.
Make pictures.

I saw the composite before somewhere, I think its awesome...that lens has some serious depth of field...cool way to take the everyday and turn it into something more.
ƒ1.4 is really fun sometimes.
your comment reminds me of what i tell folks who ask me about what camera to buy. i always say you're better off buying a crappy camera and spending money on lenses. the camera will be replaced, your lenes will live on.
most camera "kits" are sold with crappy lenses. that's no good. the day i see a kit with a prime lens, i'll change my opinion.
Clay, you magnificent bastard.
You gave me that same advice - and I still need to upgrade my cheap 50mm f/1.8, and find a good replacement from the crappy kit lens that came with my Canon 350D. Any recos for a good all-arounder?
flysi, a 50 1.8 is fine. the 1.4 is the only one better. i can't speak to the actual glass but presumably it's fine.
for your Canon 250D "all-rounder" maybe you can find a good 17-55 ƒ2.8 like this
Yowza, i took some shots like these on my last trip on the wonderous new york-to-dulles shuttle. why are implements of air travel so facinating? is it just because we don't see them as often as the inside of a car (or a subway car for you Manhattanites)? I never seem to get around to posting personal stuff though. I was farting around with my newest toy, a 50mm f1.2. I never actually use it at 1.2 much (basically a lot of live music stuff where I can throw all technical accuracy out the window), but sometimes it's pretty silly fun! --MiKE, shadowflood.com
