Photo Workouts

I am in Salt Lake City visiting my friends at Gym Jones. They are the folks who trained the actors and stuntmen for the film 300 and they run a lovely website with a very photo-centric aesthetic. This is due in large part to the photographic passions of Mark Twight. When I am in town I get to be the "guest photographer" and he's gracious enough to give me a nice shout out on the days I shoot.

Today my 17-55mm officially crapped out and is stuck in the 35mm range but I worked around it for the purposes of the workout. You can check out the week's efforts starting here and continuing through this coming Monday.

I built a nice set of Photoshop actions for Mark to do his thing so we should see lots more good stuff in the future. I personally love the square and his mix of ambient light and flash. It's right up my alley.

Make pictures.

ah, sorry your equipment keeps quitting. just remember they're not supposed to bounce ;)

I just love all the chalk prints on the floor around his hands. I think it just adds a whole new layer.

oh you don't even know. this morning i was literally bouncing the lens off the floor trying to get it to zoom again. I flipped it around, bounced it from about 5 feet, even threw it a few times which at first glance is pretty odd. They're tough buggers once they're already broken.

Hey Clay , I got a question about the fitness exercices that people do at Gym Jones. I see in the videos that people do a lot of deadlifts (with serious weights on the bar). Now isn't that really bad for your back ?

Clay Enos said...

deadlifts are tricky if you do them with bad form. otherwise, i think it's the best lift in the world for optimum health.

i'd also refer you to coach dan john and his "ten tips". he's a brilliant coach and the last thing he'd want to see is injury among his atheletes.

So what are you going to do about your equipment? Switch systems or fix/replace the lenses? I hope you write about whatever you decide to do.

And as always - I really enjoy your blog and images

What a great Gym. I'd love to do something like that.

Sorry about all the equipment problems lately.

Hi Clay,

I've been searching all over the net and experimenting myself for about a month trying to duplicate the black & white + blur effect that is used in Gym Jones pictures. Would you mind providing a few details on how you were able to achieve the effect?

Thanks!
Ryan

Hi Clay,

Nice blog. Anyway I wanted to know what kind of exercises, or better what kind of workout regime, you had Rain do to get fit for the Ninja Assassin movie.
