What's in a Gaze?
This is one of those images that lingers in your head. Maybe that's a bit presumptuous. It lingers in mine. I shot it early in the trip but didn't get around to giving it some lovin' until today. I like the obstructed, less than perfect, quick but deep gaze. The filthy shirt's texture is a bonus. Subject-wise, it's more of the same in terms of children's curiosity but the lack of smiles and fleeting compositional codes give it make it resonate more than most of the others.
Every image we make is coded with meaning. Some are more obvious or cliche than others but then, it's a rare thing to make an image that's so original that new codes of meaning can be introduced. I was showing a friend recently that just burning and dodging an image can change it's feel and thus, it's meaning.
This is perhaps a bigger issue that I'm not prepared to explore right now but I enjoy the fact that a photograph, such a common thing, can wield such profundity. This one, maybe not so much, but I hope you catch my drift.
Make pictures that resonate.

Many of your images linger for days, sometimes longer as I go back for another look beyond the actual subject to what is happening or not as the case may be. The fact that women are the most difficult to capture and the children willing to allow a small glimpse into their world says so much. Thank you for sharing. The bag balls, amoung other images are on my mind.
I have read your blog ever since you went on the LightSource Photography Podcast.
I am a 17 year old guy who is just beginning to learn the art of photography.
Your work has inspired me, and driven me to 'make pictures.'
Thank you so much for being willing to keep up with a blog, go on a podcast, and inspire others with your work.

Still alive and well??
Have a happy Halloween?
=( No more Clay.... I heard he put down his camera for good and his moving to South Africa. This sucks.
I heard that while he was shooting in Canada he was at a hockey rink and got his hand stuck in a zamboni and they had to amputate his right arm.
wow that's crazy.. hopefully he can shoot with one arm... :P

Still alive and well?
I have my money on sex reassignment surgery. He has been in Canada for a while... I think Clay will reemerge as Claire.
My second guess is that he is prison. I think all the "coffee growers" he's been shooting was a cover for the cocaine he's been smuggling.
Wow! Easy... settle down. He's just been very busy.
I miss him, too.
And, Clay, if you're checkin' in... it's getting chilly! LONG SLEEVES would be nice! (No fear...) HINT! :)
Hey Clay, missing your creative posts and photographs! Hope all is well.
Duane...
Come back soon....
Where are you?
Are you taking pictures?
Are you OK?
Clay for real dog.. where you at?
c'mon man!
